College Magazine

Analysis

Weaknesses:-
One of my weaknesses from my college magazine front cover was that the photos taken were not of good quality, I need more experience in photography and also to not rush my work as the end result is blurry photos.
The second weakness is that I didn’t have a great verity in fonts; Photoshop has only a limitation of fonts which affected my magazine.

Lastly I think one main weakness is that I didn’t pick more eye catching colours instead I used black. This resulted in my magazine front cover to look bland.

Strengths:-

One of my strengths from my college magazine front cover was that I blended the two images well together; it really gives the magazine a more professional outlook.
The second strength is that the images I took were clear and bright, although I don’t have great experience with taking photos I still think it came out well.
Lastly I think the characters of the words are well pronounced.

College Content Page

Analysis

Strengths:-

Weaknesses:-
One of my weaknesses from my college magazine content page was that the photos were not blended in well; I wanted to make it look like the photo was faded but unfortunately it ended up looking rushed.
The second weakness is that the photo I included could have been bigger.
Lastly I think I should have picked a different font for ‘Content’ unfortunately my font were limited due to me using Photoshop.

One of my strengths from my college magazine content page was that the black characters come out on the blue background and the black writing are more noticeable.
The second strength is that the images I took were clear and bright, although I don’t have great experience with taking photos I still think it came out well.
Lastly I think it is well layout also the way it is presented is eye catching; with the bright colours, bold writing etc.

Textual Analysis Of College Magazine

Main Image: - The magazines main image is the photograph of a black man in the background; the setting colour is black which gives the picture a nice affect because he is wearing a black jacket. There is some low key lighting in the mans’ neck (shading), this shows that the light is coming from both sides but the light is stronger in the viewers left; this is because the man is not standing straight in the middle, his body moves more to the left. The man is also breaking the forth wall as he is looking directly at the camera. The front cover is meant to attract audiences and I think this magazine does a good job.
Masthead: - The name of the magazine is displayed in a specific typeface. This masthead is mainly blocked by the main image, although it is blocked the viewer than still know what is says. The masthead show the importance of the main image because he’s Non-Verbal-Communication is quite strong, he is standing tilted to the left holding his school books; this tells the viewer that not only is he a good student but also that he is important. The masthead is usually used on the contents page inside as well as the front.
Coverlines: - Coverlines are pieces of texts that attract an audience to the contents of the magazine. The coverlines show that this magazine is appealing to a modern society; with issues like ‘why we love blackberry’ this topic really appeals to the youth of today with their advanced technologies. The coverlines are bold; it is set that way to be eye catching.
Dateline: - The dateline is on the top right of the magazine, normal dateline shows the month and year of publication but this magazine shows the year and the season. This shows a more modern way of dateline.
Selling Line: - The selling line is meant to be short, sharp description of the title’s main marketing point. This magazine shows a good example of that; ‘Your exclusive guide to everything hip hot & happening’. The selling line shows that this magazine appeals to the youth (15-18), it helps the audience keep up to date with everything that a college student should be kept up to date with; e.g. things that are hip, hot and happening. It gives the impression that this magazine is essential, as youths they should buy the magazine otherwise they wouldn’t be up to date with everything social.
Main Coverline: - The main coverline is the largest coverline on the front cover. Its purpose is to display and promote the main featured article in the magazine. For this magazine it would be ‘Dancehall’s Bright Future’ this is the most important coverline which is why they made it the biggest and made it in yellow; an eye catching colour.
Barcode: - Standard bar code used by retailers so that the sale of the magazine can be registered quickly during its purchase.
